On the Post is an oral history project which explores the history of the people who have worked "on the post" in London.
Digital-works is working with a London primary school, The Postal Museum, The Communication Workers Union and older and retired workers themselves to uncover the history and stories from the lives of London's postal workers. The project explores this history from the perspective of the people who are crucial to delivering the capital's mail.
Year 6 children from St George the Martyr worked with historians and archivists at the Postal Museum in Clerkenwell to research this history. They learnt oral history techniques, film and audio and interview skills.
They interviewed 22 current and former postal workers and these interviews have been turned into a film and a series of podcasts entitled Postman's Knock.
Take a look at the project website for full interviews, podcasts, the film and the children's writing for the project.
We are grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund the Communication Workers Union for financially supporting this project.
