digital:works contribution to the Fabric of Our Town project comes to a conclusion with the launch of the film made with young people from St Joseph’s School in Crayford, Kent.
It’s a fascinating film about a thriving and long-lasting industry that only ended at the beginning of this century but saw workers fight the poor law, support chartism, strike for fair pay, forced to steal turnips to survive and ended up in the workhouse. There are some great interviews with workers from the last surviving factory and some wonderful archive footage of the processes they went through.
